It’s Sunday!

… And I am on duty in the Centre… with 13 seafarers visiting…

A look back at a few events since I last updated this blog…

Well it finally has been confirmed. The proposed new harbour at Nigg Bay has been given planning permission in principle by the city council last week for the development, estimated to be worth more than £400m.

Aberdeen Harbour Board have released this video showing how the proposed expansion at Nigg Bay could look. You can see it here: https://vimeo.com/166805108

There have been mixed views on this project. My personal opinion is positive – and I do live in Torry and regularly walked my dog down the coastal path… It will be beneficial for many reasons, but I am not going into that here…

The harbour has kept me and my volunteers busy – as well as supporting seafarers in their homes; hospital and at the seafarers centre. Life is never dull and the few days away on retreat are a distant memory now!

The Cruise Ship season has arrived with two vessels in this past week. The pictures tell their own story… but it was good to be able to renew friendships from last year and to build new ones. These guys and gals, mainly Filipino, do an incredible job looking after their passengers… 9 months and 12 hour shifts, yet they smile and enjoy the visit of the local chaplains and where shore leave permits, a visit to the Seafarers Centre and use of the free WiFi and pool… rare times of relaxation!

Obviously the crews are happy that somebody cares! It isn’t much, but what little we offer them, they do greatly appreciate!

We do our best with the funds that we receive and endeavour to bless every seafarer that not only visits the harbour – by our team of Ship Visitors, but also those who visit the Seafarers Centre – by the team of dedicated volunteers who man the centre 7 days a week, 365 days a year!

We are always looking for more volunteers, so if you live in Aberdeen and would like to give up one evening a month to bless seafarers from around the world, the do get in touch! It really is a fun way to spend an evening and you will get to meet with people from all over the world. It is fascinating to interact with these seafarers and hear their stories…

Last month we hosted a Managing Volunteers Course run by the Merchant Navy Welfare Board – just a couple of pictures from that!

The two delegates are my colleagues, Peter and Drew. They certainly enjoyed the food and I am sure that the course was beneficial too!

If you would like to put on a training event, do get in touch…

IMG_6193Naomi-CeilingAnd finally, before I close the centre up for the evening… My DIY projects  continue…

My son and I have framed the ceiling in Naomi’s bedroom… the lathe and plaster had been damaged prior to our moving in, so rather than strip it all off, and since the ceiling is relatively high, we opted to frame it and the next stage will be to put up plasterboard before I get a professional plasterer to do a final skim…

Enjoy your week!
